An Angel In Krakow | Abel Korzeniowski
In his acclaimed debut film, Polish director Artur Wiecek spins a light-hearted fish-out-of-water fable about a rock ‘n’ roll-loving angel sent to earth to perform good deeds and, in the process, hopefully develop a better appreciation for the plight of mere mortals.
Eschewing the traditional tendency toward “celestial” music in films with deific themes, Abel Korzeniowski instead opts for earthbound strains, soulful themes, and orchestrations evocative of both the whimsy and the melancholy of human mortality. Inflected by traditional Polish influences as well as more modernist classical influences, it’s a score that almost perfectly encapsulates Korzeniowski’s ability to capture and harmonize otherwise contradictory emotions into a more richly satisfying whole.
