Corto Maltese | Franco Piersanti
Italian comic book author Hugo Pratt’s famous World War I-era sea captain comes to life in this animated adaptation of his 1974 graphic novel “Corto Sconta dette Arcana,” centering on the roguish Corto’s treasure-hunting adventures in 1918 Mongolia and Manchuria.
Best known for his successful collaborations with fellow Italians Nanni Moretti and Gianni Amelio, composer Franco Piersanti here takes a step back in time, drawing inspiration from the bold adventure scores of the ‘30s and ‘40s when composers like Franz Waxman and Max Steiner turned adventure scoring into a veritable conversation with the audience. In like fashion, Piersanti’s music here smoothly rolls between the whispers and shouts of Corto’s epic on-screen adventure. A half dozen different tempos and tones articulate in grand fashion in tracks like Corto e Raspoutin La Giunca In Fi while a more stand-alone tenor defines other tracks like the boldly epic Il Treno – Movimento Epici di Un and the tentative, mysterious Zona D’Ombra.
