Escape From New York | John Carpenter, Alan Howarth
Director John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic stars Kurt Russell as the infamous Snake Plissken, a renegade ex-soldier recruited to break into the maximum security prison that used to be the city of Manhattan and rescue the President of the United States… within 24 hours.
Another memorable electronic collaboration between director Carpenter and Alan Howarth, the score for Escape from New York draws extensively from the pop synthesizer work of ‘80s era rock, funk and pop groups (“69th Street Bridge”), occasionally delving into more abstract fare (“Descent into New York”) to give the dystopian adventure film an equally dystopian musical signature. There’s no masking the Oberheim-influenced sounds here – cold, hard ‘80s electronica a stark reminder that the film’s ominous depiction of humanity in decline leaves little room for hope – only survival.
