Ghost Writer | Paul Cantelon
After co-directing The Anniversary Party with Jennifer Jason Leigh in 2001, Scottish actor Alan Cumming made his solo directing debut with this horror comedy about a music teacher (Cumming) whose affection (bordering on obsession) for a young writer (David Boreanaz) sets in motion a series of unexpected, horrific and, ultimately, amusing events.
To capture the film’s unusual tonal balance between horror and comedy, earnest emotion and inaccessible obsession, composer Paul Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) relies almost exclusively on the simplicity of a solo piano, accenting only occasionally with voice and strings. Rather than enhance the drama of exterior events, Cantelon’s music aims for a more interior effect, underlining the uncertainty and instability of emotions unraveled by progressively out-of-control events.
