Human Resources Manager | Cyril Morin
In this acclaimed 2010 adaptation of the 2006 A.B. Jehoshua novel “A Woman in Jerusalem,” Israeli director Eran Riklis (Lemon Tree, The Syrian Bride) tells the story of a human resources manager at a massive Israeli bakery who must journey to Eastern Europe on a somber mission to ward off a potentially catastrophic public embarrassment for his company.
In their second collaboration, following 2004’s The Syrian Bride, director Riklis and French composer Cyril Morin strike a more darkly humorous pose, underlining the film’s absurdist qualities while simultaneously emphasizing its brooding humanism. Post-modern interpretations of traditional Hebrew and Eastern European music rendered with traditional instruments eventually foster a hybridized collection of cues reinforcing the two regions’ shared ethnic, cultural and musical identities: the reverential “The Mission,” the buoyant Gypsy-inspired “Escaping the Cemetery,” the soulful waltz “A Woman in Jerusalem,” the hauntingly somber “A Proper Funeral.”
