Rambo: First Blood Part II | Jerry Goldsmith
In this blockbuster 1985 sequel to 1982’s First Blood, Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo returns – reluctantly – to Vietnam to locate and rescue POW’s… by any means necessary.
Echoing the transformation of the Rambo franchise from modest action drama to bona-fide action blockbuster, Jerry Goldsmith revisits and revises his own testosterone-fueled motifs from the previous score, shedding its quainter thematic invocations in favor of amplified percussion, horns and heavy synthesizer (“Preparations,” “Betrayed”). It’s a quintessential Goldsmith military score, “Patton”-style, times ten, all suspense and adrenaline, all the time (“Village Raid/Helicopter Fight”). Most noteworthy here is the augmented use of synthesizer – a development in Goldsmith’s work from the late ‘70s that reaches its apex here with one track, – “Preparations,” abandoning conventional acoustic orchestration entirely.
