Rambo III | Jerry Goldsmith
In director Peter MacDonald’s third installment of the franchise that began with 1982’s “First Blood,” John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone), ever the reluctant hero, is recruited to bring his guerilla warfare prowess to the aid of Afghan Mujahideen rebels fighting the occupation of the Soviet Union.
Keeping pace with the franchise’s move to desert terrain and a more epic backdrop, Oscar-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith switches up his previous scores for “First Blood” and “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” maintaining the essential military muscularity of the franchise’s musical signatures while incorporating Near Eastern themes and instrumentation (Preparations, Pesha War). Also diminished is the previous film’s accentuated use of synthesizer in favor of more florid use of strings intended to evoke the epic exoticism of such scores as Maurice Jarre’s “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Lion of the Desert” (Then I’ll Die), and Mikos Rosza’s “El Cid” and “Ben Hur” (The Game).
