Second Chance Season | Randy Miller
Director Daniel H. Forer’s acclaimed 2007 documentary looks at the almost superhuman hopes pinned on the shoulders of 17-year-old high school basketball recruit (and eventual NBA player) Nick Young as his family looks to finally come to grips with his older brother’s murder some 13 years earlier.
A more subdued effort relative to his narrative scores, Randy Miller’s gentle, rhythm-and-blues inflected underscore provides just the right amount of emotional nudging so as to not unduly interfere with the film’s deeply heartfelt story. From the upliftingly soulful vocals over funk-inflected beat of Plan A and 800 or Better to the rock riffs of Special Players, the blues guitar intonations of Foul on Cleveland and such subdued incidental synth cues as Jackie Robinson Park and Nick Cries, Miller enables audiences to feel even more deeply the raw emotions of an already powerfully moving film.
