Seven Days In Utopia | Klaus Badelt, Christopher Carmichael
Matt Russell directs Lucas Black along with Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Melissa Leo in this adaptation of David L. Cook’s book “Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia,” the story of a young and promising golfer (Black) who lands in the small Texas town of Utopia after his disastrous pro debut only to wind up unexpectedly mentored in both golf and life by a wise old rancher (Duvall).
To meet the challenge of underscoring the film’s uniquely American melding of sports and spirituality, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl composer Klaus Badelt and longtime associate Christopher Carmichael opt for a simple, folk-inspired acoustic score with evocative orchestral accents – a dash of Aaron Copland and a touch of Woody Guthrie. It’s an approach not far afield from that of Randy Newman’s The Natural score, archetypal Americana painted in broad strokes through the harmonious fusion of acoustic guitar and orchestral horns in such tracks as “Caddy,” “Find Some Conviction,” “Fly Fishing” and “Painting Shot.” A slightly more inspirational bent emerges in tracks like “Final Hole” and “Father’s Daughter” while “Cowboy Poker,” “Fight and Rodeo” and “Putt Off” veer unapologetically into Kentucky bluegrass. Fans of soft country-western will appreciate the film’s lone vocal track – “Eyes on Me” – sung by Jacqueline Becker.
