Smilla’s Sense of Snow | Harry Gregson-Williams, Hans Zimmer
Based on Danish author Peter Høeg’s bestselling novel, Bille August directed Julia Ormand, Gabriel Byrne, and Richard Harris in this thriller about an Arctic ice specialist who is drawn into a deadly mystery involving the murder of a six-year-old neighbor and the dealings of a secretive mining corporation.
The collaboration between award-winning composers Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer has produced a score of ominous portent and proportion. Quietly reflecting the desolation of the Arctic, the music broods and emotes, building in intensity as the story draws ever closer to discovery and revelation. Of particular note are “Isaiah’s Theme,” a melancholy piano piece with an almost dirge-like quality; and “Secrets of the Ship” which presages the lushly tense electronic suspense-scapes that Gregson-Williams would go on to create for Tony Scott.
