Using Film Music | Super 8 Trailer
Of course, your friends at Score Revolution believe that film score is a brilliant answer to so many licensing questions… Score Revolution’s “Using Film Music” column explores great examples of how film music has been licensed and repurposed for trailers, advertising, and other media.
Super 8 is a tribute film to Spielberg – so naturally they would use a John Williams score for the trailer, right? But, they chose a track from Cocoon (composed by James Horner), a movie about old people going to space (spoiler), and it works PERFECTLY. The track, called “Through the Window,” was split into three distinct sections, and through skilled music editing, it was reordered to fit the trailer seamlessly. The trailer begins with an innocent theme played on vibraphone, which sets the tone for the story of a small town told through the eyes of a child. The danger and mystery build with sinister strings and rumbling horn drones, which slowly reach a climax at the third act of the trailer. After giving us a quick beat to breathe (1:35), echoing horn clusters enter, blaring in intensity while syncing with the rhythm of a new shot. The cymbals and strings crescendo with bells seemingly tickling the sky, producing a rich and wondrous feeling. They capture all the magic, wonder, and excitement I felt when I was a kid watching films of the 80’s; I got chills when I saw this trailer for the first time.
From time to time, I’m going to use this space to geek out a little about the use of film music in trailers. It would be great to hear from you regarding your favorites. Feel free to brag about your own film music placements.
