The Bridge | Alex Heffes
Powerful, affecting documentary from director Eric Steel, examining the people who choose to end their lives by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge.
Beauty and sadness coalesce to great effect in this majestic, unnerving score from Alex Heffes (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland), who approaches his subject matter (suicide) with sensitivity, respect and grace — every evocation of comfort is accompanied by a sense of unease via precipitous strings, hollow metallic echoes and scrapes, subterranean bass notes, and electronic distortions, but dark evocations of the abyss are held at arm’s length by a predominant lightness of touch . . . and the main piano theme is gorgeous.
