The Fog | John Carpenter
The original John Carpenter horror classic, made just two years after his landmark Halloween, centers on events that transpire in a small California town when a ghostly fog rolls in, haunted by the spirits of long dead sailors.
As usual, Carpenter acts as his own composer here, contributing another early pioneering effort to the corpus of electronic film music from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. It’s an effective continuation of and expansion upon the Halloween score, rumbling bass and eerie treble riffs merged with piano and gothic organ, musically connective tissue that ties it not only to Halloween but to the silent horror classics the film strives to emulate with its time-spanning tale of ancient ghosts imposing themselves upon unsuspecting modern mortals.
