The Gift | Christopher Young
Sam Raimi’s supernatural whodunit thriller, co-written by Billy Bob Thornton, finds psychic Cate Blanchett in the Deep South, witness to a crime via second sight.
Christopher Young (Species and The Exorcism of Emily Rose) knows how scare the living daylights out of a horror audience, but here he excels with a much broader brief than the merely chilling — a folk-style fiddle is brought on board for local deep southern flavor, warm melodies are at times left unadorned, but also expanded with full orchestral sweep (courtesy of the “Northwest Sinfonia”), and — for moments of high-tension — sudden bursts of cacophony are punctuated by rough, suitably nasty scratchings of violin.
