The Limey | Cliff Martinez, Danny Saber
Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed 1999 drama, authored by frequent collaborator Lem Dobbs, stars Terrence Stamp as Wilson, a British ex-con who comes to Los Angeles on a mission to investigate and, if need be, avenge the death of his daughter.
For his eighth collaboration with Soderbergh, Cliff Martinez taps a strain of old-fashioned noir to compliment an eclectic soundtrack already brimming with ‘60s and ‘70s era pop tunes and a handful of Danny Saber-produced funk incidentals from the film’s pivotal party scene. Nervous strings and neurotic piano sound out the evolution of Wilson’s emotional journey from anxiety to paranoia to rage. By turning suspicious, suspenseful and mysterious, the score provides a glimpse into the inner workings of a damaged man and a ravaged mind, a brilliant musical counterpoint to the glossy veneer of the sun-drenched Southern California backdrop.
