The Mothman Prophecies | tomandandy
Based on John A. Keel’s bestselling 1975 novelization of his own 1967 investigation, this 2002 supernatural thriller from Director Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) stars Richard Gere as Keel’s semi-fictitious alter-ego, a reporter looking into sightings near Point Pleasant, West Virginia of a strange, winged creature known as the Mothman.
Known collectively as tomandandy, composers Tom Hajdu and Andy Milburn amp up the obligatory creep factor with an unsettling eight-movement alternative rock score that layers gothic synth with heavy industrial sound effects, bookending it all with the blues-inspired song Half Light. It’s an appropriately enigmatic score for an enigmatic film – neither fully a thriller nor fully a horror film, The Mothman Prophecies – as well as its score – seeks to strike a chord somewhere between the intellectual and the visceral.
